About the item

This is a remarkable set of art deco – Memphis style chairs by Belgochrom Belgium 1970s

The chairs have likely been specifically commissioned by the owner of an American luxury yacht during the 70s or 80s. This yacht was decommissioned in the Mosel-area of Bonn/Koblenz already years ago. The previous owner bought the chairs (among other furniture) from this boat considering the boat had to be deconstructed. The chairs have been standing in the living room quarters of the yacht, apparently at the small guest dining table.

The chairs are well-built and feature a brassed steel frame with upholstered velours backrest and seat. In particular the curved shape of the frame towards the backrest have strong similarities to the art-deco period. The backrest in itself, a round upholstered shape, has strong similarities to Japanese designs such as the Esprit house chairs from Shiro Kuramata. They also bare a lot of similarities with the Vienna chair by Rodney Kinsman.

About the condition

The chairs have some overall wear such as some discolouration of the brassed steel and some small scratches near the bottom. The velours has been remarkably well preserved, without any damage, and only with some slight staining.
