About the item
A very special modernist glass and wood (small) coffee or (large) side table.
This table has been used as a foyer- lobby table at the stadsschouwburg (city hall) in utrecht (netherlands) and the previous owner came in possession of this table with the renewal of the interior of the stadsschouwburg several years ago.
Although this table is not attributed to any designer, the resemblance with gerrit and wim rietveld is certainly present. In particular the design of the feet and the way the slats are aligned towards each other certainly bears a lot of similarities with rietveld. Certainly the table bares a lot of resemblance with the “De Stijl” Dutch design movement from 1917 to 1931.
Considering wim rietveld has done some custom interior projects in the netherlands for remarkable buildings back in the days, it’s not impossible that it concerns an original rietveld piece. However this is not traceable nor does the table bear any marks. The beech wood fame and the (smoke) glass both plate have a hexagonal design.
Certainly the chance to acquire a very special dutch modernist design.
